Locations are presented in the order they first appeared in this episode. Where locations are returned to during the narrative, or are linked in the narrative (i.e. roads leading to a specific destination) we have grouped them together here for the sake of tidiness. Timings given are based on UK DVDs with 'PAL speed up'.

WOOLWICH FREE FERRY

NORTH WOOLWICH
LONDON E16

Identified by:
Stephen Carter, March 2002

(03:42) The Jennings gang discuss the Rodens.

Spotter's Note: The 'Now' photo shown to the right was taken in September 2018. A month later, the Ernest Bevin ferry boat seen in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) was retired after 55 years' service. It had been built in Dundee in 1963 and was one of the three diesel boats that replaced the old paddle steamers used on the Woolwich Ferry since 1889. Each boat was named after a prominent local politician, her sister ships being the John Burns and the James Newman. All three could carry 500 foot passengers and 200 vehicles and were withdrawn from service on 5th October 2018. After a four month suspension of the service, they were replaced by two boats, the Ben Woollacott and the Dame Vera Lynn.

(07:15) Jeff and Jeannie walk back to the car only to find a stranger - George Roden - getting out of their car. He apologises, saying that he has mistaken Jeff's car for his own. He departs, but soon Jeff and Jeannie realise that the stranger has left something behind - a dead body on the back seat!

Also appeared in:
Used extensively in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and other ITC programming.

Spotter's Note: This sequence was not, as one might assume, shot at the studio car park seen in the establishing shot. It was specially staged in the area between the former water tank and the boundary fence, as the production photo demonstrates.

Since Filming: This area remains a part of the studio complex and until recently bordered the Big Brother House, which was demolished in November 2018.

(10:00) Mort Roden and Mike Hales wait outside the police station while Jeff and Jeannie try to identify suspects.

Spotter's Note: The original station building seen in this sequence was built in 1912 and demolished in the mid-1970s, with a modern replacement police station opening on the site in 1976. It closed for the last time in December 2017, a result of a decision by the Mayor of London to scale back police services.

(11:21) As Jeff and Jeannie discuss her disquiet about the evening's events, Mike and Mort pull up in their Ford Galaxie across the road.

Spotter's Note: This shot is a camera cheat, as the Galaxie pulls up on Jeannie's side of the road (outside house numbers 158-174), but in terms of the narrative, is supposedly parking on the opposite side. We believe this was decided upon because of the way in which one side of the road is bathed in sunshine on bright days (as was the case on the day of filming). This sequence was shot day-for-night so it would have been beneficial to shoot the other way round to avoid sunlit areas as much as possible.

Spotter's Note: The first ship seen in this sequence is the P&O cargo liner MV Strathbrora, one of three ships built in 1967 which were dubbed the 'Super Straths' as part of the promotional campaign for the new vessels. It was a cargo vessel that could also accommodate a small number of fare-paying passengers. The ship was sold to Thailand in 1979, where it was renamed Benjamas. SHOREDITCH
LONDON EC1

Identified by:
Stephen Carter, March 2002

(31:36) Establishing shot of the Magistrates' Court, where George Roden is being tried.

Since Filming: The Magistrates' Court and Police Station building is now a five-star luxury hotel, The Courthouse Shoreditch, which opened in 2016. The court was moved from this location in 1996 and the police ceased using the building in 2008. Famously, writer Joe Orton was tried there, accused of stealing books from Islington library, and the Kray twins appeared before magistrates there on the charge of demanding money with menaces. After its closure its interiors were used in many films and television series including the BBC's Spooks and Luther.
